Outsourcing content marketing: What should an agency deliver?

When marketing gets complexGoogle Certified Specialist

A good content marketing agency does not simply deliver text; it delivers content that gets found, answers your customers’ questions and leads to enquiries. That includes topic planning based on search data, articles built on expertise from your business, technical implementation and reporting that links content to enquiries. Your expertise remains indispensable throughout.

Why content marketing often stalls in-house

Regular content takes time, and day-to-day business always comes first. On top of that, good content combines subject expertise, writing craft, SEO and technology. Rarely does one person bring all of it. Typical results are a blog with three articles from last year or lots of content that nobody finds.

What an agency should deliver

  1. Topic planning based on demand: what questions do your customers ask, how often are they searched for, and which of them lead to orders?
  2. Interviews instead of guesswork: a short conversation with your experts provides the knowledge that sets the article apart from competitors.
  3. Content that answers questions straight away: clear structure, answer first, examples from your practice. That is also how content gets cited in AI answers.
  4. Technical implementation: page titles, internal links, structured data, images with alt text.
  5. Maintenance: update existing content before writing new pieces.
  6. Reporting: visibility, visitors and, above all, enquiries per piece of content.

How to spot a poor provider

  • Price per word with no topic research.
  • Texts that could be transferred to any company in the industry.
  • No questions put to your experts.
  • Lots of articles at once, then nothing for months.
  • Reports with page views but no enquiries.

What should stay in-house

Approval and expert review. Nobody knows your services, prices and customers as well as your team. Plan around 30 minutes per article for an interview and 15 minutes for approval. This effort makes the difference between interchangeable text and content that sells.

FAQ

How much does a content marketing agency cost?

Three models are common: a price per article, a monthly retainer for a fixed package of planning, writing and maintenance, or billing at an hourly rate. Retainers usually make more sense because topic research, updates and reporting are included, not just the writing. When comparing offers, check which services are actually covered by the price.

How long does content marketing take to work?

Content marketing is a medium-term channel. New content first has to be indexed and establish itself in search results, which usually takes several months. Updating existing pages that already have visibility often works faster.

Can an agency write content with AI?

Google judges content by its quality and usefulness, not by whether AI helped write it. Mass-produced text without original value does, however, violate its spam policies. AI makes sense as a tool when it is combined with expertise from your business, your own examples and human review. Ask your agency openly how it uses AI.

When to hand this over

  • Your blog or guide section is no longer maintained.
  • You have content but no measurable enquiries from it.
  • Competitors are found for your topics, you are not.
  • Visibility is falling because AI search answers simple questions itself.
