SEO costs: What does SEO cost per month, and when is in-house no longer enough?

What SEO costs depends mainly on scope: how many pages, how much competition and how much new content per month. On the market, ongoing retainers in the low to mid four-figure range per month are common, while one-off audits usually cost less. What matters is not the price alone, but whether the service fits your goal and whether you can measure the results.

The common pricing models

  • One-off SEO audit: Technology, content and competition are reviewed, and you get a list of actions. Useful as a starting point or before a relaunch.
  • Monthly retainer: A fixed allowance for analysis, implementation and reporting. The most common model for ongoing support.
  • Hourly billing: Flexible, but hard to plan. Suitable for specific individual tasks.
  • Project price: For clearly defined projects such as a new service page or a relaunch.
  • Performance-based: Payment by rankings. Sounds fair, but encourages easy keywords that generate no revenue. Treat with caution.

What determines the price

  1. Competition: “tax advisor Wiesbaden” is easier than “tax advisor” nationwide.
  2. Size of the website: A shop with 5,000 products needs more technical work than a site with 20 subpages.
  3. Content: New copy is usually the biggest cost item. If you supply content yourself, you save money.
  4. Technical condition: A slow or faulty website has to be fixed first.
  5. Reporting: A report that links rankings to enquiries takes setup, but saves discussions later on.

How to spot SEO that is too cheap

Guaranteed number-one rankings, bought links in large quantities, automatically generated texts without review and reports that only show rankings. This can create movement in the short term, but puts the visibility of the entire domain at risk.

When in-house SEO reaches its limits

Many companies start SEO in-house, often with someone from marketing or a working student. That works as long as it is about copy and the basics. It gets difficult with technical issues such as indexing, page speed and structured data, with a relaunch, with multiple languages or locations, and when AI search features such as AI Overviews change your traffic. That is when experience and tools are missing.

FAQ

How long does it take for SEO costs to pay off?

SEO works with a delay. Google itself states in its documentation that it can take several months up to a year for changes to have their full effect. Technical fixes can take effect sooner, while new content on competitive topics takes longer. Plan SEO as an ongoing investment and do not judge the costs after the first month.

What should an SEO proposal include?

A good proposal states the scope precisely: which analyses, how much content or how many hours per month, who implements the changes on the website and what the reporting looks like. It should also cover the contract term, notice period and a clause stating that the content created belongs to you. Without these points, it is hard to compare different proposals.

Is SEO cheaper than Google Ads?

There is no general answer, because the two work differently. With Google Ads you pay for every click, and visitors stop coming as soon as the budget runs out. With SEO you pay for the work, and visitors do not cost you per click, but building results takes longer. Many companies use Google Ads for quick enquiries and SEO for a steady long-term base.

When to hand this over

  • Organic enquiries have stagnated for several months.
  • A relaunch, new locations or a second language are coming up.
  • You cannot say which pages bring in enquiries.
  • The person doing SEO on the side no longer has time for it.
