Google AI Mode is a separate search mode in which Google answers a question with a detailed AI response instead of a list of ten links. Your website now only appears as a source next to the answer. For businesses, this means fewer people click through for simple questions, but those who are cited as a source get visitors who are already well informed.
In classic search, the user decides which result to open. In AI Mode, Google takes over that step. The AI breaks the question into sub-questions, finds matching pages for each and summarises the answers. Users can ask follow-up questions without starting a new search. Google itself calls this approach “query fan-out”.
This leads to three differences that matter for your marketing:
Google Search Console has no separate report for AI Mode. Typical signs are:
To check, compare the last three months in Search Console with the same period a year earlier, broken down by page type. This shows you whether a decline is down to AI Mode or another problem, such as a loss of rankings.
Suppose your guides section brings in 2,000 visitors a month and 0.5% of them make an enquiry, which is 10 enquiries. If AI Mode takes away 30% of the clicks, you are left with 1,400 visitors. If the remaining visitors are better informed and 0.7% of them enquire, you still get almost 10 enquiries. So what matters is not traffic alone, but how well your page turns the remaining visitors into enquiries.

Yes. Google has gradually rolled out AI Mode to more countries and languages, and it is now available in German too. It appears as a separate tab in Google Search and can also be reached via the Google app. The regular results list still exists; users switch to AI Mode themselves.
You can’t opt out of AI Mode alone. The only controls are the usual snippet rules such as nosnippet or data-nosnippet, which then also apply to regular search. The Google-Extended setting in robots.txt covers training for Gemini, not the AI features in Google Search.
Google is gradually integrating ads into AI answers as well. There is no dedicated campaign type for this; the ads come from existing Search and Performance Max campaigns. Whether and how often your ads appear there depends on market, language and campaign settings, and it keeps changing.
