You measure AI visibility with three groups of metrics: how often your brand is mentioned in AI answers, how many visitors reach your website via AI assistants, and how many of them enquire or buy. No single metric is enough. Only together do they show whether work on AI visibility pays off.
You collect these figures manually with a fixed set of questions or with specialised tools. What matters is that the questions, assistants and timing stay the same, otherwise the figures are not comparable.
When someone clicks a link in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Copilot, Google Analytics 4 often sees a referral source such as chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai. This is how you capture these visitors:

Connect the channel group to your conversions. Only then can you see whether AI visitors enquire more or less often than visitors from Google Search. In many cases there are only a few of them, but they are well informed and ready to decide.
For management, four figures a month are enough: the mention rate for your core questions, visitors from AI assistants, enquiries from AI assistants, and the comparison with the previous month. Everything else is working material for the marketing team.

Not at present. Impressions and clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the regular web search figures and cannot be filtered out separately. Queries whose click-through rate falls while impressions stay stable can give you a hint. For direct measurement, you still rely on your fixed set of questions and specialised tools.
Yes, but not in GA4, because bots usually do not run the tracking script. The visits show up in your hosting’s server logs, identifiable by user agents such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot. Some CDNs, such as Cloudflare, also show these crawlers in their own analytics. This tells you whether your content is being fetched at all.
AI assistants regularly get new model versions, draw on changing sources when they search the web and never phrase the same answer in exactly the same way. Individual outliers are therefore normal. Ask each question several times and judge the trend over several months rather than a single value.
