B2B lead generation: When is an agency worth it?

When marketing gets complexGoogle Certified Specialist

A B2B lead generation agency pays off when your sales team could handle more qualified enquiries than currently come in, and when nobody in-house can take on the channels, the tracking and the coordination with sales on a lasting basis. What matters is that the agency is measured by qualified enquiries, not by clicks or form submissions.

Which channels work in B2B

  • Google Ads on searches with clear demand: Someone searching for “compressed air system maintenance contract” has a problem and a budget. Clicks are expensive, but the intent is clear.
  • SEO for specialist questions: Buyers and engineers research for a long time. Good specialist content brings in enquiries for years.
  • LinkedIn Ads: Good for targeting by industry, job title and company size. More expensive per click, better suited to awareness and content such as white papers.
  • Retargeting: Brings back visitors who have already been on your website. Particularly effective in B2B, where decisions take a long time.

Why B2B lead generation quickly gets complex

In B2B, a single person rarely decides alone, and months often pass between first contact and the order. Google Ads and LinkedIn only see the form, not the order that follows. Without feedback from sales, the systems optimise for as many form submissions as possible, including poor ones. Only when qualified leads and orders from the CRM are fed back into the ad platforms do they learn to find the right companies.

What a good agency must deliver

  1. Define together with sales what counts as a qualified lead.
  2. Build tracking all the way into the CRM, including feedback on closed deals.
  3. Landing pages with a clear benefit and few form fields.
  4. Monthly reporting with cost per qualified lead and pipeline value.
  5. Regular alignment with sales on the quality of enquiries.

Warning signs with providers

Fixed prices per lead without a definition of what a lead is. Bought address lists or mass emails. Reports that only show clicks, reach and form counts. And contracts under which the campaign accounts belong to the agency instead of you.

FAQ

How much does a lead generation agency cost?

Common models are a monthly flat fee, a percentage of the ad budget or hourly billing, sometimes combined with a setup fee for tracking and landing pages. The ad budget for Google Ads or LinkedIn is usually charged separately. If you pay per lead, agree in writing beforehand what counts as a qualified lead.

How quickly does B2B lead generation deliver results?

Google Ads can bring in the first enquiries shortly after launch, while SEO builds up over months. In B2B, however, you only know whether the enquiries are good once sales has worked them and they have turned into proposals or orders. So do not judge an agency on the first few weeks, but on at least one full sales cycle.

What data does the agency need from sales?

At a minimum, the status of each enquiry, such as qualified, proposal, won or rejected, ideally with the order value and the reason for rejection. This data is best fed automatically from the CRM, or as a regular export if necessary. To pass on personal data, you need a data processing agreement with the agency under the GDPR.

When to hand this over

  • Sales complains about too few or too poor enquiries.
  • You do not know which channel brings in orders.
  • Campaigns are running, but nobody connects them to the CRM.
  • You want to grow without building your own marketing department.
