Running YouTube ads: What do they cost, and when are they worth it?

YouTube ads are run through Google Ads and are usually billed per view or per thousand impressions. There is no minimum budget. They are mainly worth it once Google Search is maxed out and you want to reach people before they search for your service. You do not need an expensive video to get started, but you do need a clear message in the first five seconds.

How billing works

  • Cost per view (CPV): with skippable ads, you pay when someone watches for 30 seconds, watches the whole shorter video or clicks.
  • Cost per thousand impressions (CPM): for short non-skippable formats and bumper ads.
  • Cost per conversion: for campaigns optimised for enquiries or sales. This requires clean conversion tracking.

What a view costs depends on audience, region, competition and the quality of the video. Allow at least four to six weeks for a meaningful test.

Who YouTube ads make sense for

  • Products and services that need explaining or showing.
  • Businesses whose search campaigns perform well but have stopped growing because no more people are searching.
  • Local businesses that want to become better known in their region.
  • Remarketing to visitors to your website who have not yet enquired.

YouTube makes less sense if you do not yet have a working search campaign. Without one, you lack the basis to measure success and capture prospects.

The most common mistakes

  1. Too long an intro: logo animation and music before the message arrives. After five seconds the viewer is gone.
  2. Too broad an audience: all of Germany, all age groups. That brings cheap but useless views.
  3. Measuring the wrong thing: views alone tell you nothing. What matters are searches for your brand, website visits and enquiries in the weeks that follow.
  4. No remarketing: anyone who has seen the video should then see search or display ads.

How to start with little risk

Start with a 15 to 30-second video that shows a problem your customers have and names your solution. Show it first only to visitors to your website and to people who have searched for your topics. Measure over six weeks whether brand searches and enquiries increase. Only then broaden the audience.

FAQ

Do I need my own YouTube channel to run ads?

Yes. The ad video has to be uploaded to YouTube and linked to your Google Ads account. It does not have to be public: an unlisted video is enough, so it only appears as an ad. You do not need an active channel with lots of subscribers.

Can I show YouTube ads only in my region?

Yes. You can limit delivery to countries, states, cities or a radius around your location. Combined with audiences such as age, interests or previous website visits, you reach people in your catchment area specifically. For local businesses in particular, this avoids wasted spend.

Can I choose which videos my ad runs on?

Partly. You can select specific channels or videos as placements, target topics and avoid unsuitable content with exclusions and content suitability settings. There is no complete control over every single placement, so it pays to review placement reports regularly and exclude poor environments.

When to hand this over

  • Your search campaigns are hitting their limit and you want to open up the next channel.
  • You do not know how to measure the success of video advertising.
  • Nobody on the team knows their way around audiences and video formats in Google Ads.
