Google Ads freelancer or agency: When does outsourcing pay off?

Outsourcing pays off as soon as Google Ads takes up more time than you have, or as soon as mistakes in the account burn more money than professional management would cost. A freelancer usually suits a manageable account with a single channel. An agency suits you when several channels, tracking and reporting have to work together, or when gaps caused by holidays and sick leave are not an option.

Three signs that doing it yourself is no longer enough

  • You look at the account less than once a week. Search terms, bids and budgets change constantly. If you only check monthly, you notice problems too late.
  • You do not know exactly which campaign brings in enquiries. Then proper conversion tracking is missing, and every optimisation is guesswork.
  • Google’s recommendations are applied without review. Auto-applied recommendations and broad keywords often increase costs, not enquiries.

In-house, freelancer or agency compared

Doing it yourself works if the account is small and someone on the team has the time and interest and keeps their skills up to date. The price is time, not money.

A freelancer is often cheaper and directly reachable. They are a good fit for a clearly defined account, such as search campaigns for one region. Limits appear when tracking, landing pages, Shopping feeds or additional channels come into play, and when cover is needed during holidays.

An agency brings several specialists together: campaigns, tracking, analytics and often SEO and the website too. That pays off when these areas are interlinked. Check who actually manages your account and how often.

How to recognise a good provider

  1. The Google Ads account, Analytics and Tag Manager remain your property. The provider only gets access.
  2. They ask about your goals and margins first, not your budget.
  3. They check the conversion tracking before restructuring campaigns.
  4. The reporting shows enquiries and cost per enquiry, not just clicks.
  5. The contract term is short and cancellation is simple.
  6. They are a Google Partner or can demonstrate experience in your industry.

Worked example

A company spends 3,000 euros a month on Google Ads. An audit shows that 25% of clicks come from search terms that never lead to enquiries. That is 750 euros a month with nothing in return. If management costs less than that and eliminates this wasted spend, it has paid for itself on that basis alone, before any new campaigns are added. Our Google Ads budget calculator shows how much budget is realistic for your goals.

FAQ

How much does a Google Ads freelancer cost?

Freelancers usually charge an hourly rate, a monthly flat fee or a percentage of the ad budget. The amount depends on experience, account size and scope, for example whether tracking and reporting are included. You always pay the ad budget separately, directly to Google. Ask for a clear breakdown of what the flat fee covers.

Can I start with a freelancer and switch to an agency later?

Yes, that is a common path as the account grows. What matters is that the Google Ads account belongs to you from the start. Campaigns, history and conversion data then stay intact when you switch, and the new provider is simply given access. If the account belongs to the freelancer, the new provider may have to start from scratch.

Can in-house management be combined with a freelancer or agency?

Yes, and it is often the best solution. Someone in-house looks after offers, ad copy and feedback on lead quality, while the external specialist handles structure, bidding strategy and tracking. Agree in writing who may make which changes in the account, so that nobody undoes the other’s optimisation.

When to hand this over

  • Your ad budget is rising, but enquiries are not keeping pace.
  • You want to use additional channels such as Shopping, YouTube or Performance Max.
  • Nobody on the team is permanently responsible for the account.
  • You need reporting that management understands.
